During my time at Texas Tech University, I took a photobook making class. Our final assignment was to create a book of our choice. I chose a comic book format because I grew up loving comic strips like Peanuts, Mutts, and Garfield. I've always been drawn to their humor, their chaos, and their storytelling. For the story, I took inspiration from Pirates of the Caribbean and Back to the Future, two of my childhood favorite movies. When I was younger, I loved imagining myself sailing the seven seas and time traveling through time with my dogs. To create this book, I photographed my dog, Grace, and myself using two flashes to create even lighting to make compositing easier. For the other characters, I used a website called Hero Forge, so the story had more characters. I built the environments in Blender and then layered everything in Photoshop. I applied a posterized effect to the images of Grace I to give the images a comic book aesthetic and then added shadows and highlights to make the scene feel more cohesive. For the comic ads, I looked up vintage comic book advertisements. And put my own spin to it. I blurred and changed the language of the text to draw more attention to the headlines because a lot of ads focus go to the headlines. We printed the final book through MagCloud. Overall, this project was an experiment of storytelling in a different way while also capturing Grace's fun and energetic self.
